I'm coming to Chapel Hill next week for a doctor's appointment at the hospital and need to find a decent place to stay that maybe isn't too expensive. I'd like to find something fairly close to the hospital. Any recommendations?

Vegetarian and gluten-free restaurant recommendations are welcome too!

Thanks!!

The hospital can give you a list of hotels that offer discounts to people coming to town for medical care or to visit hospital patients. When I had surgery there in the fall, my mom stayed at a Holiday Inn. I don't know vegetarian restaurants, though I'm sure there are some in the area - maybe someone else will chime in on that.

We've put my folks up in the La Quinta on 15-501 (Durham address). Nice and clean, about a 10 min drive to the hospital and typically can get a room under $65.

A little closer in (5 min drive), theres a cluster of hotels on 15-501 that are a bit more expensive (Sheraton, Hampton, Holiday Inn, Residence). These tend to be a good 30-60 bucks more a night than the Laquinta.

Sage is a vegan restaurant, and theres also and ethiopian restaurant (Queen of Sheba) with alot of vegetarian options. These are on the North side of town. Closer to the hospital, some places with good vegetarian options are Spotted Dog (tavern), Carrburrito (fresh burrito), Tallulahs (Mid eastern), Lime and Basil (vietamese) and a Mint (Indian). As far as gluten free goes, I'm not sure, but these probably are good bets to have both.

Thanks so much!! Every bit of info helps, since I'm not familiar with the area.

Toot68, I'm giving some thought to staying at the La Quinta you mentioned. I've checked out the others close to the hospital and--you're right--they're much more expensive. FVmommy, I will definitely take your suggestion and call the hospital to find out any that might offer discounts.

Thanks for the restaurant suggestions, toot68. Thai and Indian are good bets for both veg & gluten-free. I'll have to check them out!

Thanks again!

There is a Hampton Inn at NC 54/I-40 (Exit 273) about 4 miles from the hospital. Holiday Inn and Sheraton and a few others on US 15-501N (Fordham Blvd).

I stayed at that LaQuinta on 15-501 a few years ago when we were moving to the area. I know of several people who have stayed there since and enjoyed it. It has an indoor pool and whirlpool and free breakfast. I know you probably won't be swimming but I figured I would mention it. Make sure you mention the medical discount and it will be well worth it.

If you want great Thai, the best place in the Durham/Chapel Hill area is Thai Cafe in Durham...its about 5 min from the LaQuinta, in the opposite direction from Chapel Hill, at the corner of University and business 15-501.

Thanks everyone for all the great info! Sounds like I need to check out that Thai place with the money I save by staying at La Quinta.
