Just wanted to let everyone know that two teenagers (ages 15, 17) struck me and attempted to chase me down while riding solo on the ATT. The incident happened at 12:30pm on Sunday afternoon near the Otis street crossing about 1 mile for the ATC. The trail had a number of people on it today so it was incredibly surprising. I was able to call the police who tracked them down (still walking on the trail). The police called me back and stated that one of the teens' mothers was in the process of beating him severely and that he was headed to boot camp in a few weeks anyway. The basic feeling I got from the policeman (who was extremly nice) was that pressing charges (simple assault) was going to be a hassle and probably wouldn't achieve very much. Please take care on the trail and solo riders beware. I will think twice before heading out on this section of the trail again.
That's terrible Steve, I'm so sorry that happened to you and hope your injury isn't severe. I rode the ATT recently with the boys in my youth group thinking we'd see Durham PD Bicycle Unit on patrol there. Nope. Steve, in light of what happened to you, maybe you could inquire with the chief if they do patrol the trail in any capacity - bike, motorcycle, or foot - and when. I hope you'll email our city council, as well, making as many people as possible aware of what happened to you.
What a bummer - I was thinking of doing some riding on the trail myself once I get my bike fixed up. I'd likely be riding by myself though - not a good idea I guess. :-(
I hate to hear this. I use the ATT frequently for commuting from American Tobacco to Cornwallis and have never had any trouble. I have frequently seen DPD on bike and foot patrol on the trail, especially between Hillside and Forest Hills.
