I am traveling from the Triangle to Boone next week. I haven't been west of Greensboro since moving here. I am looking for suggestions for places past Winston - Tourist Stops, Neat places to see and restaurant recommendations off of Route 421? I am not in a rush so a few miles off the road in either direction is okay with me.

Thanks.

You could certainly spend some time in Old Salem. Here's a link so you can gauge your interest:

There are a few state parks that are nice: Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock & Stone Mountain. There are also a lot of wineries in the Yadkin Valley between Winston Salem & Wilkesboro.

In Wilksboro just off 421 there is a beautiful lake called West Kerr (I think)
Nice trails, vistor center ect.

If you're into Nascar, the old N. Wilkesboro Speedway is right off of 421.. It's pretty neat to get a glimpse of some Nascar history. I drove by there recently and the place looks just like it did 20 years ago, just maybe a few more paint chips. Same old Winsten Cup signs and old logo's... It's not exactly "open to the public", but you can drive around it and snap a few pics without anyone bothering you...

Kernersville is between Greensboro and Winston-Salem, and is the home of Körner's Folly, a place I've wanted to visit for a while. It looks like fun.
