Article from today's NYT on "The Guy Who Picks the Best Places to Live". His new book is on bookshelves Monday. Cary ranks No. 7 for families. (click on left side of second page for chart showing Cary). It's interesting how the criteria has changed for rankings. Three years ago people were more interested in jobs now it's housing affordability. Also, Raleigh residents might relate to the statement that "being No. 1 is not all that it's cracked up to be." I have his first book and used it as a starting point.

Tigerlily, did you notice he rated Portland as the #1 place for young couples? Portland ALWAYS ranks high on something. BTW, Sperling lives in Portland 1/2 time and at the coast 1/2. LOL! He's keeping his investments in line.

PDX Mom, I bought the new book and haven't had a chance to thoroughly review. I'm a little perplexed because he's grouped Raleigh and Cary as one and Durham/Chapel Hill together. Last book was Raleigh-Durham. I knew he lived in Portland. Do you think his residence influences his ratings decisions? LOL

The metropolitan statistical area (MSA) used to be "Raleigh-Durham." That MSA has been split into "Raleigh-Cary" and "Durham," which includes Chapel Hill. I believe MSAs are defined by the US Census.

FYI: According to Sperling's 2007 ratings, the Durham NC MSA is rated #15 in the US in his Overall City Rating out of about 400 MSAs.

The Raleigh-Cary MSA is ranked #63. Asheville NC MSA is ranked #7.

This is all of course subjective (just like college rankings, etc.) I think the key takeaway is that the Triangle is a "great place to live!"

I agree the Triangle area is a great place to live. In Sperling's last book he had Raleigh-Durham combined and rankedt No. 13. It's hard to make comparison because he changed the groupings. We're pretty much concentrating on the Durham area. You're right about the college ratings.

Am I misinterpreting Cary as #63 as quite far down the list? Is this out of 100?

(I wouldn't brag about being 63rd, but that's me )

It's 63 out of 400 metro areas. Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed

Cary itself isn't 63rd on the list -- it's the entire Raleigh metro area, which includes Cary.

He ranks Cary as being 7th best for families, and Raleigh as being 7th best for young couples. Not too bad!
