Has anyone seen persimmons for sale in Raleigh or Durham? If so, where? I have't been able to find them.

Default Persimmons? Yum!

Are you looking for the American or the Asian variety?

If you want the native (American) ones, it is probably a little late for fresh ones as they do not travel well, so, you might be limited to buying the preserves, butters or breads.

As to the Asian ones: This time of year, I have frequently seen where Harris-Teeter will bring in from Israel - what they call "Sharon fruit" - but it is most likely a hybrid of the hachiya variety of persimmon.

Want to grow them? Years ago, I used to grow the fuyu and hachiya varieties and had several older native trees. If you have any full-sun space at all, the Asian varieties could do well, producing as many as 10 to 15 fruits each in as little as three or four years. For the first five years, they do not take up much space. If need be, you could probably even container-keep them. Asians are available as bare roots after the first of the year at places like the State Farmers Market.

Sorry, can't think of persimmons, without singing the old Southern Folk song:

"Possum up a 'simmon tree,
The raccoon on the ground.
The raccoon says, "You son of a gun,
Throw them 'simmons down."

Have any Asian friends? Or brave it and goto an Oriental grocery store yourself and look at the produce section. If you can communicate with them, you'll find that these small stores are extremely friendly.

Thanks everyone! I think the first/last persimmon I had was American but I'm not 100% sure so I'll look for the Asian counterparts you suggested.

The American ones are smaller and more wrinkly. The Asian ones are larger and more orange (also, less good).

This is the time of the year to "pick" the American persimmons. Look for them in older neighborhoods or along roads (I'm working on a GPS map of Triangle persimmon trees). Just shake the tree and collect them.

You won't see American persimmons for sale because they don't keep well.

I literally just saw some in Harris Teeter off of High House in Cary, a small display of less than 12 I think, where the "exotic" fruit is (star fruits, kiwis, etc.) Even though you ask about them in Raleigh or Durham maybe they'd have them at your local Teeter's also?

I've never had a persimmon. Is it similar to dates or some other fruit?
