Can some locals tell me about Spring Lake, NC? Is it really a dangerous violent place? And if so why? Is it a safe place for a single female to live? What social activities are there? What is the ethnic makeup of the town like? What is the cost of living like and what does a 1 bedroom apartment average? Also are there good doctors and specialists like rheumatologists and endocrinologists in the area?
I wouldn't move there. I don't even think they have a police force back after the state took away all their authority and the county has to patrol it now.
Spring Lake borders Ft. Bragg. You'll find lots of military families there. From what I remember, not much else. It's a small, country town with probably less that 10,000 people. Not sure of the cost of living or medical services available. Fayetteville is probably 15 - 20 minutes away and I'm sure they have descent medical care. They did lose their police force due to corruption and are trying to get back control from the county. It wouldn't be my first choice if I were single. There are lots of great small towns that are closer to Raleigh and Durham, where you'll find a ton of great doctors.
It's basically a suburb of Fort Bragg. It's on the other side of Bragg from Fayetteville. Not someplace I would particularly recommend moving to unless you're military and couldn't find housing in your price range elsewhere which would be pretty unlikely. Your drs would be in Fayetteville. I don't think Spring Lake has a hospital. I would NOT characterize it as a "small country town". There's nothing particularly country feeling about it. I wouldn't recommend it for a single female although I'm sure there are plenty there. It's one of those places with no there there. Plenty of pawn shops, dollar stores, gun shops, and folks that cater to the military (embroidering patches on uniforms, etc). 'Course I'm sure there are nicer areas than others, but really not much going on there. You'd be better off in Fayetteville and that's saying something.

Actually the place as far as shopping goes sounds like where I live now except for military presense. Concerning living there as a single do you advise not to for socializing reasons or safety? My concern is safety with living alone. As far as socializing I don't get out and party myself and am a bit of a homebody and seriously doubt I will ever get married because of my age so that's not the issue. Plus I have a place to socialize in Spring Lake because there is a martial arts school there I want to attend. Safety and freedom from being approached by creeps is an issue. I had a lot of trouble in the past in the town I live in currently with street drunks and strangers coming after me. I had never dealt with street people till I moved here.
I don't advise living there for any reason. I wouldn't advise for a married couple to live there, either. I mean, if you HAD to that would be one thing, but there are many nicer areas within close proximity. I'm sure there are some neighborhoods that are okay and relatively safe. I wouldn't be surprised if there were "street people" (not exactly sure what you mean there). I guess if your martial arts school is like a dojo or something and you want to live there that would be one thing, but otherwise I'd probably live in Fayetteville or maybe farther north and drive into the martial arts school. I assume it's a very special martial arts school 'cause otherwise I can't see the draw. Actually, for myself, I can't think of any less desirable place to live in NC.

I really don't understand why everyone says an undersirable place but then they don't ever explain why exactly. Is it racial tensions, crime or what? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to go into detail here.
But yes it is a special dojo I want to attend studying under a former Olympic coach and the highest ranking female martial arts in the world. I know people that aren't into the arts won't understand but to some of us the lifelong discipline of the asian arts is important enough to move to where the teacher is. And I wouldn't be the first to move to be closer to her. Many ppl will even commute a hour to class the teacher is that highly regarded. So if you all are just talking the typical depressing, dirty Southern small town full of biblethumpers and non-liberals I think I can handle it because I spent 29 years living in those kinds of towns in TN and managed to survive it without losing my sanity.
There are towns that have a lot more to offer and are more up and comming than Spring Lake. The last time I went through Spring Lake it seemed dingy. However, if you're moving soley for the martial arts school and don't mind the asthetics, go for it. I can imagine that she gets good busniess in a military town. I'm sure you could find a descent neighborhhod where you'd feel safe.
