Before I ask, trust that I already know that this is a loaded question, but I'll ask anyway. If you were fortunate enough to live in either or and investigated both, what were "your" reasons for choosing the Trinage over the Charlotte and it's surrounding areas?

GODO QUESTION! We actually went through this dilemma. Originally we had figured on relocating to the Charlotte area...even narrowed down the towns to either Huntersville or Matthews.

But....... we live at the Jersey shore (born and raised) and we decided we would REALLY miss it(the beach) being so far away if we lived in the Charlotte area(3-4 hours). We also have all of our family in S. Jersey, and it would be much easier for them to visit us if we lived closer to I95. SO we switched gears and did research on the Eastern Raleigh suburbs...and landed in Clayton. Its exactly 90 minutes to Wrightsville Beach(We timed it on our last visit) and has everything we were originally looking for in the Charlotte suburbs(good schools, afforadable housing, good prospects for a teaching position for me, an up-and-coming/growing area, semi-rural yet near a big city etc. etc.)

We move next month to Clayton

My dh wants to be closer to the beach too, and I95, since we have family both up north and in Fl. Raleigh is exactly halfway between here and there!

Not quite the same, but if the job that brought us down had been in Charlotte, I don't think we would have moved in the first place.

It's an okay city to visit for a concert or something...but just don't like it otherwise.....and you think our schools have concerns?? Their have down right problems!!

I actually lived in Charlotte for 12 very long months! Coming from the north, there really is not much around the city. Too far from the beach, too far from 95, too far from everything. For being a city, Charlotte really doesn't have much to offer for families.

I ended up moving to MD, love it here...but the democrats are running us out!

So I began to look into the Raleigh area. Closer to the beach, located on 95, lots of family activities to do. Seems very family oriented! I am going down for my second visit next week, will let you know how it turns out!

My wife and I decided to leave Dallas TX back in 2002, but we didn't have a place in mind for a new home. I'm originally from Pittsburgh, so I wanted 4 seasons, trees, and some hills on the landscape. My wife didn't want a place too cold, that was her only stipulation. We also wanted someplace that was affordable.

We took scouting trips to Hot Springs AK, Memphis TN, Nashville TN, Chattanooga TN, Asheville NC, Charlotte NC, and Raleigh NC. Although we liked Asheville the best, there were no job opportunities for me there. Ditto for Chattanooga and Hotsprings. We didn't care too much for Charlotte, only because of 2 things: 1. It felt like one big city, which it is, rather than a few smaller cities each with it's own personality, like the Triangle area is. and 2. While the "vibe" here is basketball, basketball, basketball, the vibe in Charlotte seemed to be NASCAR, NASCAR, NASCAR. We chose the lesser of two evils

My wife and I have been scouting areas and "on paper" Charlotte looks good especially the Lake Norman area. However, I hear it's very crowded and expensive. If you are a lake person, I'm sure Lake Norman is a great place. However, the Raleigh area seems to be much more diverse.

We love Raleigh for these reasons:

There are 3 major hwys...I-40 going thru Raleigh and within 45 minutes you can access I-95 or I-85. The number of colleges in the Triangle area, large or small, state or private, etc....big choice. Collegiate sports with 3 major schools in the Triangle area. Professional hockey, now professional soccer. 45 minutes to the beach, 2 hours to the foothills of the mountains. Number of jobs with availability for any field of work. Close proximity to other cities (Durham & Chapel Hill), for events if Raleigh doesn't have what you are looking for. Crime rate is lower.
Maybe I should duck on this one .....but once the Wake County school situation settles down in the next year or two, and their vision becomes more clear to us you could possibly select your childs school schedule. YR vs Traditional based on where you chose to live. I do not know WCPSS boards long range goal so this is all in question. This past year has appeared to be chaos, but as anything when it is new to so many people, and such a big change/overhaul it looks and feels like this.
