I got a DUI when I was young (22). If I move to NC will I effectivly have 0 DUI's. I only ask this because I hate putting that one old DUI on job resumes.

Thanks!

If you're asked if you have a DUI, then yes, you do. It doesn't matter where you got it. Moving to NC doesn't make the fact of having a DUI elsewhere disappear.

Lightbulb leave it out

Just leave it out, if you get caught you can say it was an honest mistake. It works for those on Capitol Hill.

Don't miss it out , it shows your honest , just have a good answer if someone asks you the question. If you miss it out and someone finds out about it , it always looks bad

DUI's will be on the national driving registery. I had to have mine pulled (my NDR) due to me applying for a transportation job. I believe the record goes back 10 years, but I'm not sure, when I had mine pulled I had been driving 7 years, and I fortunatelty haven't had to have it pulled since.

See here:
National Driver Register | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) | U.S. Department of Transportation

and here:
National Driver Register | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) | U.S. Department of Transportation

Apparently you can call this number:

1. How can I find out if I am listed in NDR?

You are entitled, under the provisions of the Privacy Act, to request a file search to see if you have a record on the NDR.

Please call 202-366-4800 for more information.

----------------

Also keep in mind your potential employer will most likely conduct a background check on you if they are asking about DUI's. These records don't ever really go away, and the reason I say that is there are a lot of companies out there collecting and archiving this information. Even if the DUI is expunged from public record it was still collected a long time ago. So I guess what I'm saying is, don't lie. There have been instances of people at my job that were hired, and then subsequently fired due to the background check showing up something they "forgot" about.

So when you get a ticket it goes on your record no matter what state you move too. They are all connected now. I got a ticket in PA and it showed up on my license in MD when I pulled a report.

Also it's there forever regardless of what you hear, about insurance companies ect. Insurance might only pulls last 3 years but it's possible to pull a lifetime version, at least according to what my DMZ driving class drilled into me.

Not all states are connected, PA and MD might have some sort of an agreement but generally this is not the case. The NDR is a different list which is reserved for license suspensions, DUI's, and other motor vehicle felonies.

I've gotten tickets in FL and NM on a NH drivers license and insurance nor my NH drivers record ever showed anything.

It's best to be honest, but if possible note the date (if it was a long time ago) even if it doesn't ask for that. While it is likely that they might not know about the National Registry, better for you to be over-honest than to get busted for something, which immediately makes you untrustworthy. Most places probably won't hold it against you (transportation jobs, perhaps) but they certainly would if they found one you hand't reported.

Of course, it may depend on how it is worded: some places ask about "any convictions except traffic offenses" and while DWI is probably NOT what they consider "just a traffic offense", I guess there would be a loophole if you were caught and you could say you thought it didn't count--that is still risky and calls your trustworthiness into account.

Put it this way: anyone who would decline to hire you because of a DWI years ago would CERTAINLY look down on you for having one AND lying about it, but someone who didn't feel that it was a problem might still have a big issue with finding out about it later. Take the high road.

My friend genuinely forgot about his MIP on a job application and got disqualified for hiding it, just FYI.
