They can't trademark "Hope Valley" in relation to
any use of the name but they could trademark the use of Hope Valley in relation to a a residential development in southwest Durham.
Similarly, the Fearrington name dates back over 200 years but if I tried to open a restaurant in Chatham County named "The Fearrington Restaurant" then Fearrington House Restaurant would sue me and would likely win.
