Dont forget Crabtree Creek! If you go soon after a decent rain, it is a nice paddle all the way from Lassiter Mill dam down to the Neuse River.
You need the book! "Paddling Eastern North Carolina" by Paul Ferguson. It is an excellent guide to just what it says in the title, complete with maps, rivers divided into sections with scenery and rapids descriptions and more.
The Lumber River Canoe Club is also a good active paddling group based a bit south of here.
They and the Friends of Sampson County Waterways have very active Yahoo! Groups you can join to get trip announcements and such.
(The Neuse always has water to paddle below the Falls lake dam. )
I've done the Paddle Creek thing. I've never been kayaking previously, but it was a great beginner-level kayak trip. My husband and I used a 2 person kayak, and felt that we got decent exercise. I like hiking, so the kayak trip was a nice change from our usual outdoor routines.
