Can't speak to Wake County schools, but I'll give my take on Chapel Hill schools. They are very very very very good at college prep. If you have a high achieving bright kid who wants to go to Harvard or MIT or Stanford Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools are great. I have heard they are pretty good with special needs kids, too. The complaint I have heard is that sometimes the average kids in the middle fall through the cracks. They have also had some trouble bringing up scores for low-achieving kids and some schools have had trouble meeting NCLB guidelines. I think there is a fairly large gap between the fortunate, high SES, high achieving kids and the less fortunate, low SES, lower achieving kids. That's not to say that all lower achieving kids are lower SES, but there is some correlation. There is also a sizeable first generation immigrant population (primarily Hispanic, but there is also a notable Burmese population) who may have language issues.
Anyway, that's my Chapel Hill resident's view on it, but my big disclaimer is that I don't have kids in the CHC schools. I could easily be off on some of this, but they are great great schools for college prep. No doubt about that.
