2 weeks away from closing day...as I sit here and cross things off the list of things to do...I have been on the fence about an alarm/security system...
Does anyone have a home security/alarm system for their home? Would you recommend them? I did a search on the forum, only came up with CPI, just requested someone contact me there to give an estimate.
I am sure there are others out there, like ADT, Brinks, to name a few...

Any information would be great...
Neighbors have ADT and they like it...however they are going to cancel it at the end of their contract. They just don't use it. Guess it depends on where you life if you really, really need one or not.
We use CPI and like them alot. I have never felt like we needed an alarm, but my wife thinks differently.....so we have one. There are some features that I liked better about CPI than some of the others; they have their own in state monitoring service center(alot of companies farm it out resulting in lengthy delays), at the time we got ours they were about the only ones that had the 2 way radio that opens when the alarm goes off for voice communication, and I like that they encourage you to test the alarm once a month so you know that it is working.

We usually test our alarm at least once a month whether we planned to or not.
We went with the company that did the pre-wiring for our home, Secur-Tek (http://www.secur-tek.com/). CPI was the runner up for us. The biggest reason was CPI required a long term contract. Secur-Tek allowed month to month monitoring. We like the freedom of being able to drop the monitoring service whenever. Heck - we don't even sign cell phone contracts for longer than a year.
I think if you do a little research you'll find that most people dislike the national security companies: ADT, Brinks, etc. I'd suggest finding a good local or regional company to work with.
We went with ADT, costs us less than $40 a month. We got ours for the fire and carbon monoxide monitoring more than for the theft. We have a ventless fireplace and two little ones so the alarm really just lets us sleep better at night
We have CPI, and to be honest where we are we just have never had any crime , so just don't use it. But it is there if we ever decide to, and a deterrent hopefully to those that get a need for "being bad".
I picked ADT because they did free wireless install as part of the builders' package. The monitoring fee is $33.00. I almost chose Brinks but the free install pretty much made my decision.
I just moved to Raleigh and, no joke, every day I get at least 1-2 calls from local security companies trying to earn my business by annoying me on the phone. It reminded me to add my new phone to the national do-not-call list and add my new address from the available do-not-mail snail mail lists.
I think your choice of provider/monitoring service would greatly depend on how much equipment you currently have installed in your house. My house has an existing Brinks system which is about 9 years old. But it only monitors 1st floor doors and windows being opened as far as I can tell. No motion detection, no glass-break detection. So if I were to subscribe the company would likely need to make some hardware investment to satisfy my full desires for security monitoring.
