I am picking Raleigh simply because I accepted a job offer in the area. Straight up I would pick Charlotte over Raleigh.

A friend of mine, who is a North Carolina native, puts it this way: Charlotte has the rich people; The Triangle has the smart people.

I would take smart over rich, because eventually the wealth will come. Just my opinion.

I wonder what all the rich people in Raleigh and the poor people in Charlotte think of that!

The people in Raleigh are much friendlier - spend some time on the Charlotte forum and you'll see what I mean!

You could think about it this way - $400 to have someone service the septic once a decade vs ~$1k in higher taxes and insurance every year.

Well, now that all the banks have folded and might be moving to New York, there's not a lot of rich people left in Charlotte... Charlotte could be in for a huge hit if it loses the one remaining bank.

hmmm. don't know about that. check cost of living data. for some significant things (to some folks) Raleigh costs a good bit more than Charlotte. For example, good daycare centers cost A LOT more in raleigh and houses too.

Housing (buying) is less expensive in Charlotte.
