Does anyone know why their would be military aircraft landing at Triple W in Fuquay? It's been happening a lot lately and it seems odd as Triple W is a private airport. Thanks!

Can you be more specific about the aircraft that you are seeing?

Triple W (FAA Identifier: 5W5) is a private airfield that is open for public use, but only has a asphalt runway length of 3,000 x 40 feet and a maximum permitted aircraft weight of 6,500 pounds which would eliminate the vast, vast majority of military traffic.

That having been said, "http://www.airnav.com/airport/5W5" quotes roughly 2% of Triple W's operations (for 12-month period ending 30 July 2007) as being military.

It's possible they were training flights, the military, Navy I think, uses turbine Bonanzas that would fit that restriction.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, should have been more specific - I've mostly seen Blackhawk helicopters taking off and landing there.

Good call, the Navy's T-34C would fit the description. As far as Blackhawks - and all of the military flights go - they're probably stopping off for the local beer!

A lot of small airports will offer free food and beverages to the military folks, as an incentive to stop in and buy fuel.
