We are planning on visiting Rapid City for four to five days toward the end of August. We are in our early 70’s. We have been there before but there are some things we missed. We cannot do any hiking as my wife has a bad knee and after hurting my back, my walking any distance is limited. We have taken the Fort Hays tour through the Black Hills, went to Deadwood & Sturgis. Things we are planning on doing is Devil’s Tower, Wounded Knee. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Evans Plunge in Hot Springs is supposed to have some healing powers for bad joints and backs. If you run down to Hot Springs, the Mamoth Dig has an excellant tour that you should be able to handle. Cold Springs Canyon is a scenic drive that most tourists miss. And just north of town is Wind Cave national Parks with lots of wildlife to view from your car. Do not pet the Buffalo.

uh

Spearfish Canyon Loop and lunch at the Latchstring Resort restaurant within the loop is fabulous. Beautiful vistas. You can pull off the road and stop and take pics and enjoy the scenery.

It's near Lead SD.

Wildlife loop of Custer State Park is a good southern hills adventure. You can loop Spearfish Canyon in with a Devils Tower adventure. The Journey Museum in Rapid City is a good way to spend an afternoon.

Another adventure is the 1880 train, which runs between Hill City and Keystone.

August is coming quickly. Any more suggestions? Bought a new truck to take on vacation. I am going to get it out of the shop today. Someone broke into it looking for my wheel lock key to take the tires & rims. They did not get them but caused $2,850.00 damage to the truck. I just can not understand why people steal instead of working for what they want. They would feel better about them selves.

The Journey Museum in Rapid City is a truly excellent museum, if you haven't been there yet: Museums | Native American culture | Journey Museum and Learning Center

Badlands loop is another great drive. Lots of nice overlooks where you can pull of an take photos. And they have an excellent visitor center.

Spearfish Canyon loop takes you from Spearfish up to Lead, then you could take hwy 385 back to Rapid City- its a beautiful drive and will take about 2 hours. Needles Hwy drive is south of the black hills and takes you closer to Mount Rushmore and Hill City. There is also the Badlands loop East of Rapid City just off the interstate if you are up for more driving.

Thanks for all the info. We should be leaving for Rapid City in about a week and a half, God willing. How are the roads from Orin through Lusk and up to Sundance to Devils Tower than on to Rapid City? Are they good roads with traffic. I don't like to feel alone on a road I know nothing about.

That road isn't bad. I'll be rolling up through Orin to Mule Creek through Edgemont to Maverick on home next week.
