I'm not sure how active it is in Rapid. but Craigslist here always has a lot of free stuff on offer.

Also, when we lived in Watertown, I remember they would have the city wide clean up. This is basicly a set time when people can put things out by the curb to be picked up by the garbage with out paying a fee. Alot of it is good stuff, so therefore gets snatched up by people driving by. I know friends that have furnished most of their apartment this way.
