The OP would be borderline nuts to meet this guy away from the office at this point. He appears to have a loose grasp of human interaction.
And, it is fun to imagine working through the negotiation of a contract and closing with him... Not. But, often the odd becomes workable when you finally meet in person.
Any professional firm will protect agents with the option of a safe place to meet new potential clients.
While meeting at home, in a hotel or apartment or coffee house can all work, meeting in an office with other professionals present is great protection for agents.
We see reports of agents being robbed, raped, murdered, every year. It nearly always happens in a fairly secluded place.
Some clients do not want to bring the agent to their rental place. Their choice, for sure.
Often, if they are in transition, their home is in disarray. If they want that to remain private, who am I to argue?
Some clients have dogs and cats, and if they trip my allergies, I am down for the count in the first round. So, I offer an environment to meet that also works for me. It is also where the clients don't have to listen to piped-in pop music at high volume so it will drown out all the chatter around them.
I did this poll a few years ago, and the split is about 50/50 on offices. Tilts towards offices if you back out all the real estate agent votes. I think that represents reality, and I have bricks and mortar. Many people ask for it.

If I was the OP, I would request an office meeting, rather than driving 17 miles for someone who is unpredictable.
