Moving from KC to Tampa. I know people in the area but they don't know any real estate agents. I don't even know where to begin to find one. Any ideas?
Ask the folks that already live there for referrals. Use the web to get some office contacts and they use the phone to interviewer (email might get sucked into a marketing system..)
Go to the web site of local newpapers and read up on the real estate issues / ads.
Check out the blogs of agents in the area - Active Rain (Localism) is a good place to start. That'll give you a feel in advance for the agents, and then you can interview them via either phone or email.

Reason: To add link I forgot to put in.
Do you have an agent you trust in KC? That agent can interview Tampa agents and find a good fit and then refer you to the Tampa agent. With your trusted agent in KC having some skin in the game, they will monitor your progress with your Tampa agent and make sure you are satisfied. Most agents on this forum network extensively around the country and have can easily find a qualified agent in Tampa.
I was going to second TampaKaren on this forum. You can read many of her responses to see if she is someone that sounds like a good fit for you.
Otherwise, ActiveRain is a real estate blogging network so you can read some local blogs or you can google "Real estate blogs Tampa, FL" and see what agents come up. The nice thing about blogs is you get a feel for that person before you meet them.

In theory this is true, but I had one agent from another city decide not to send her client my way because I wouldn't give her a 50% referral fee. If I was going to use a referral from an agent I, personally, would ask what kind of referral fee is involved. I'd want to know if I'm being referred to a specific agent because they are giving my agent a really high referral fee or because my agent really thinks they are good.

I agree 1000%. That agent is not looking after their client's best interest only their own and should be ashamed.
