I think that very good agents don't have time for philosophical debates about their profession - they are making deals instead...
As in many other professions, I think you will find that very good real estate agents do many things besides making deals.
They coach, mentor, discuss, teach, lobby, network, support, learn, and work to promote ethical agency.
Correcting misconceptions falls under that list of ancillary activities.

Ditto. I think you'll find the very good/elite agents are actually the ones that do most of the extracurricular activities. The marginal ones lack the knowledge or inspiration to excel and do additional activities.

Well said. I have been helping a young first time home buyer to navigate through buying a condo in Chicago. I do not know much either so I have to do a lot of research for her. She does have a buyer's agent, but it seems that all the agent does is opening the doors and gives her some comps. The agent gives no advice when it comes to mortgage shopping. The buyer tried to do compare shopping, but found that nobody would give her GFEs unless she paid application fees. Finally she went with LO from the seller's preferred mortgage lender. The title insurance was really high. Since she did not get her GFE until four business days before closing, there is not much she can do, but to pay the high fee. The agent was not even of much help in price negotiation. I finally advised her to get her own real estate attorney on her own dime. What can you do, really, when you have such an useless agent, who shamelessly takes her commission. It is outrageous. Please be careful when you choose your buyer's agent. Do find a GOOD and USEFUL one.
