I will be moving out of state soon and had hoped to sell my home, but this is such a bad time and home values have dropped SO much in my area.
Is renting my home out a smarter idea? I really want to get rid of it but could try to lease/rent it. No way to know when, or if, the market will improve...but I would continue to have expenses on the home even if it was rented, so I just can't decide!
Any suggestions, comments or ideas would be appreciated~

I would hire a Realtor that works in a Firm that typically manages property (as a service to others), and continue to market it until it is sold, or maybe leased.
It will help if you hired your own Independent Real Estate Appraiser to give you and your Realtor a narrative on market value, prices, a study of market conditions, value of rents, and so on. A nice narrative will help your Realtor go faster, and be a lot smarter when exposing your property to the market.
That's the advice I got from my realtor. Advised to rent for at least two years. I'm preparing to sign on with a property manager when my house is ready.
Not yet manderly6; first will get a prof appraisal and then decide....
