I think it is all in how its protrayed and also what you're really expecting/what you're doing.

if you're expecting to meet 3-5 contractors for estimates on a range of different things, it may not go over well.

if you're talking about remodeling a bathroom or kitchen and have one or two contractors come in to give you an estimate and the contractor is going to spend 15 or so minutes in the house, then you're probably fine.

depending on what you're looking to do, contractors tend to get squirrlly about looking at houses for sale, often the buyers use their estimates as leverage on the deal and never hire the contractor. again, it depends on what you're having them do and what your relationship is with the contractor.

But you may not know the condition of the house until it is inspected, so how can you figure what to do next?

When we sold our house I would have said hell no. But buyer's agent "lost" the keys to our house & garage and the bottom of the Supra lock box when there for the buyers' inspection, and while our realtor had him pay for the locks to be changed I did not want him to have access to the house again until AFTER we moved. A little harsh? I don't think so as he blamed the inspector for losing the keys and Supra but he and the buyers were the only ones there at the scheduled inspection. How do I know? We were sitting in our neighbor's yard chatting with them the whole entire time. Mr. Buyer even came over and asked to borrow a tape measure so they could measure for curatains. Garage was not entered. IT was not noticed until days after the inspection that the keys were missing. We were asked to leave when the appraisor came, and then he couldn't get in because of no keys. Needless to say appraisor later came when we were there as the Supra was not put back onto the front door after the locks were changed.

ETA: FWIW this same agent left the front door unlocked when showing the house to the eventual buyers. No way was he coming back into our house while we still owned it.
