But we have to check on quality of build and how tough the HoA laws are to live with... While driving around I havent seen a single soul outside that I could just stop and ask friendly questions...

now im thinking of just stopping by and knocking doors and ringing bells....would people think im too weird? has anyone ever done this and got stares? is it too intrusive?

thanks!
HOA = RUN!! RUN!! RUN AWAY!!

I don't give a !@#$%^ if it's "Laid back and easy to get along" the HOA can easily change in a year into a Nazi org where there is NO recourse....

RUN!! RUN!! RUN AWAY!!!!

It's true that the HOA can change dramatically depending on who's on the board.

And the builder thing? I asked around before we bought our house and our builder had no complaints online and they seemed to try really hard to please the homeowners. Fast forward a couple of years and our foundations started failing because of mistakes the builder had made, and the builder quit building in this state.

That's a tad dramatic.

HOAs are the norm around here and I cannot say I've ever had an issue with one.

Granted, if you like leaving 12 cars on blocks out front or never mowing your lawn, an HOA neighborhood is not for you.

If you're in FL and are "knocking" randomely on doors, we might call the cops on you!

Your realtor should provide you with the by-laws! If anything you can try to find out who's running the HOA(the homeowners or a company) and ask to speak to the president!

Every time we purchase a home I knock on the neighbors doors. If my realtor is with me, she hides. My son always says "Oh Mom, how Autistic of you." Well, I AM Autistic, and I have gotten very good information by knocking on doors. The only time I have regretted it is when I was invited into a home, drank coffee, ate snacks and got to absolutely adore my potential neighbors but then was devastated that I did not get the house because I was outbid.[ I am also a little old lady, so no one feels threatened by me knocking on the door]

I would not share a single bad bit of information with anyone knocking on my door. For one thing, it's in my best interest for my neighbor to sell their house and sell it for as much as possible.

The answer is, as usual, is "it depends." If you're a resident, it's fine. If not it probably breaks HOA regulations and possibly the law.

I tend to be fearless about knocking on doors. I'm also immune to strange looks.

If I were to do what you are considering, I'd have a business card ready if they'd like it. I'd stand down off the step to seem non-threatening. And I'd have a short list of things I want to know. (Does the school bus run through here? Are there any train, plane, automobile noises at odd hours? Is internet service reliable? Is there anything positive/negative about living here you'd like to share?) Something that they can give you a yes/no then get you off their property. Or it will break the ice if they want to go into detail about something.

I'd be okay about it if you knocked on my door as long as you didn't act suspicious. Don't forget to check the Sex Offender website, while you're looking.

I would call the police if you knocked on my door and started asking questions like that. It would seem very suspicious to me and it would make me very uncomfortable.

re;builder...check with better business bureau, or the equivalent for contractors. Check public records for lawsuits. Also...do searches online for your location for web pages that rate companies.
Go park at dawn Sat/Sun...also leaving for/coming home from work hours.
Googled for you..."How to check out a home builders reputation" https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...sm=93&ie=UTF-8
