This sounds very strange and I would not give this information. This has nothing to do with the purchase of a house.Especially your child’s social security number , I would look for a new broker. I have purchased 5 homes and not once asked this.
That's crazy. They have no reason to ask for that. My father was a broker and that never happened. I would report it to the local board of realtors then find someone else.

Is this in NYC? Make sure you use a legit rental broker. They charge the same as those "scammer type" ones who ask you for personal information that isn't needed for a legal rental.
The OP is in NYC. NYC apartment hunting is another breed from other cities: the tenant hires AND PAYS the brojer/realtor who helps them find a rental.
Based on OP's prior posts, he/she is trying to obtain low-income/subsidized housing in NYC. Those programs have lotteries and very specific requirements and documents.
I agree that giving this information to a rental broker is a very bad idea. However, if OP is referring to someone directly involved in these lottery or subsidized housing programs, it wouldn't be all that surprising that they are asking for a school letter (to prove the kid is enrolled, for example) and a SS# for the kid.

What the hell is a child school letter? And no, none of this is normal, get a new broker.

It's the letter the school sends in August that tells the parents what teacher the child will have in September or when school starts. Where I am, the low income housing wanted the letter because they processed my daughters renewal app
