I am happily "locked in" to my one-bedroom, oceanfront condo in West Maui. Glad I bought when I did!

I would love to have a second bedroom/bathroom, but those units are prohibitively expensive (an extra million). If I was willing to give up my ocean view, I could buy a larger place, but the view is why I'm here.

My home is paid off, but the association fees are $900+ per month and go up annually.

This will likely be my final home unless I am eventually forced into assisted living.

My neighbor rent out his 3 bedroom home for $1425 a month since 2018,last week he told the tenant he is raising it to $1500.
His tenant first reaction is I will try to find some place cheaper in this sub.
After 20 minutes he called my neighbor and apologise profusedly that he was being rude ,$1500 is fine with him.

My electric bill is $135 to $200 per month, depending on A/C usage. (No gas.)
Water/sewer/cable/ins. are part of the HOA dues.
Property taxes are surprisingly low if you live here full-time.

No idea about assisted living. Hopefully it is decades away for me (preferably not at all).

My condo is comfortably large enough for me, but one or more of my grandkids stays here full-time, making it seem small.
I love having them here though.

My real estate agent called me asking if I wanted to sell my condo because he has someone that's interested in buying a unit in my building. Tempting, but I have nowhere to go. I don't want to overpay for another property right now, and I dang sure am not going to pay outrageous rent hikes nowadays.

I'd recommend inquiring long before you think you might need AL.

The cost is a HUGE wake-up call for most.

I used to work at a ********* facility in SoCal. (During COVID.)

Assisted Living was: $3800(1bd1ba) to $6,400/mo.(2bd2ba.)

The cost to have your meds doled out to you daily? $900/mo. (This is after you already bought the meds.

They're just giving you, your dose.)

"Memory Care" is significantly MORE.

(Btw, we lost 57 of 111 residents to COVID, in the Memory Care Unit, during the Month of March 2021.)

Let that sink in.

My dad spent ages 95-99 at an Independent Living Facility. It was like a luxury condo-hotel filled with old people. $3500+ per month. Until his final year, he could still drive.

I could handle that but if I become completely dependent upon others, I intend to end it. No desire to lie in a bed for years just to remain alive.

I am very happy living in my all paid off co-op here in Brooklyn NY.
while it is nothing special and not huge by any means, it is way affordable for today's standards and allows me to do other things that I would not be able to do, because all of my money would be going towards a mortgage.

My previous home in California had 4 bedrooms, an office, a living room, and a family room. Plenty of space for us to "spread out".

Here in Hawaii, I have one bedroom and a living room, which puts us together a lot more. It feels confining compared to my previous home but is actually closer to the way most of the world lives. Good thing we all get along well!

Today I will make my weekly Costco run, which takes a few hours. My grandson asked if he could invite a girl over while I'm away, LOL. As always, I told him: "Just make sure she's at least 18." (He and his twin are 22.)

Haha! I raised a tenant last year from $1065 to $1150 and he pitched a fit. Keep in mind the going rate for a similar home is $1800…..but wait, he’s been there 10 years and we haven’t done any major updating! And how I should be giving him a break- guess a $650 a month discount isn’t considered a big enough break.

I reminded him he was month to month and free to move at any time— to just give me 30 days notice—easy!

Needless-to-say, he’s still there. At some point I need to do myself a favor and move him on his way elsewhere.
