Does anyone out there know of a reliable real estate search engine where you can define a search area by map? In other words, I want a realty search engine that lets ME choose the boundaries of the geographical search.

I'm looking in a particular neighborhood and rather than slog through all the listings by zip code, or pages of maps that are bigger than what I need, I was hoping to find a site that offers a user-defined area.

It seems like it would be a useful tool. Maybe it exists?

Thanks for any leads.

Do you have a local realtor's website you can use? I have one I use where I can type in a street name, or the name of a subdivision and get all the listings.

I know Windermere.com has a search by map feature, but they are only on the West Coast.

The only problem with tamitrail's solution, in Oregon anyway, is that subdivision is an optional feature and not a required entry. MANY agents leave it blank here so you would lose some listings.

Zillows map is searchable, but it only has homes that have been entered either by the listing agent or the owner, so it doesn't represent all the homes available.

Remax.com allows you to search by subdivision or street name. Go to the advanced search link.

Well, if you're not looking in Hawaii this won't help you directly (sorry!), but I know JUST what you're looking for, because the site I used to search for real estate in paradise () had it (Hawaii real estate search engine - Hawaii MLS, homes, land & condos). Check it out - after selecting an island, you can zoom in on any part of the map and it will show you (by pointers on the map, numbered to correspond to the listings down the left side complete with one photo, # BR and price) just the houses for sale on that part of the map. You can then click on any listing for more details and more photos. It is really FANTASTIC! Maybe some realtors in other places should check it out and see about doing something similar in their areas. I wished they had something like this for my area in NY when I was looking to see what else was for sale in competition with my home here, and found nothing even close in ease of use and clarity of information.

You might try using Realtor.com, choosng the city (don't use zip code) and your min - max $, then click Search. The option comes up to "View on a Map" or "View as a List". If you click on "View on a Map", then you can see balloons where the properties are located, which would help you if you're trying to zero in on properties in a particular area.

Redfin has a great implementation of map searches but it's only for certain markets.
