No sugar ! but most certainly I have to add a can of whole kernel corn , minus the water , it keeps the corn bread moist inside, and does add additional corn flavor to the bread.

I add a little sugar. When we have it with beans, for dessert I have to have a piece with butter and honey. AND yes I have tasted chocolate gravy. Now, I am one that likes gravy on just about everything but not chocolate.

Default Sugar in your cornbread?

When I put noticable sugar in my cornbread batter I'm not making cornbread per se, but Johnny cakes. My go to cornbread recipe calls for 2 Tbs of sugar to 2 cups of cornmeal and 2 of AP flour.

When I make Johnny cakes, I increase the sugar to half a cup, and an extra half a cup of liquid then fry the batter by dipper full.

Fry the batter! At last someone who understands what I mean when I say my grandmothers (both) made FRIED cornbread!!

I like both ways...mostly I fix corn muffins with sugar and a 8x8 of cornbread without....

Johnny cakes are for all purporses cornbread pancakes. I grew up eating them, and made sure my children did the same.

Johnny cakes and sorghum syrup tastes like Grandma's house.

Sorry but the sugar, molasses and pudding makes it sound like dessert! I like mine a little spicy, with peppers and chipotle.

We are going camping this week and cook cornbread in the campfire in a cast iron cornbread cooker. The smoke flavor makes it taste even better.
