I love yellow-flesh potatoes so much but I've noticed for the past few months, the ones I buy from 2 or 3 different grocery stores in my small town, are not the same color or consistency they used to be. They're much more like white potatoes. I'm so disappointed. When I ask the grocery department managers, they just shrug. They neither agree nor disagree, and they don't reveal whether anyone else has complained.

I used to buy Yukon Gold. Now they're just called YELLOW and they're actually white.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I just went to three grocery stores - no Yukon Golds. However, they do have a bag marked "Yellow Potatoes."

The Yukon Gold's in our area are actually Yukon Gold's, the others are simply yellow potatoes.
There are other Gold's out there not specifically named "Yukon" but they are Gold's.
Your local grocery may not have access to the Gold's right now.

I noticed the yellow potatoes that I peeled yesterday had "soft spots" on them....I wonder where they were grown and when they were harvested.

From some gardening classes I attended, I think Yukon Gold potatoes are an earlier harvest than the typical red and white potatoes. Maybe what you have been seeing at the stores are last of the crop remnants and lesser quality.

Good point, given this year's unusual weather too.

I disagree. What you call Yukon Gold's are actually Yukon Golds... no apostrophe.

But is it possible the Yukon Gold crop failed this year? I have to say in general, this has not been much of a year for the potatoes.

Yes, this seems to have been bad year for potatoes all around, and especially for Yukon Golds. In some places there was frost damage, in other places it was drought. And not just in the US, but also in the UK. And not just commercially... I've heard the same from home gardeners.

And a great year for everything else. The apples and pears are phenomenal! You could build a house inside some of the pomegranates I've seen this year.
