I think it has a high alcohol content so it stays ok for a long time. Of course I bake so darn much that my vanilla is never around for very long

Maybe eventually something could happen to it, but I mean in 20 years or so....if it's not closed properly.....and something gets in there. I generally buy vanilla once every 2-3 years, and it's always fine.

Kind of an offshoot on the subject---but how much should I typically be paying for vanilla extract? The only bottle the closest grocery store had was a tiny, tiny "organic" bottle for 13 bucks, and it was small. That seemed to be wrong to me, I took a pass on it, and am going to go to a few more stores after work. Can I expect to find cheaper?

I don't think pure vanilla extract expires but we go through it pretty fast here. I get the 16 ounce bottles at BJ's or Costco and it costs about 6.99. Most of the time they have McCormick's but I have also used their brand and it is really the same. I like the squeeze bottles. The best is in Tijuana where you can get very large bottles in the liquor stores and it's really inexpensive.

You can find it much cheaper at any Hispanic market.
