Living in small-town New England and growing up in (what was then) small town NY, it recently occurred to me that so many adults are judged in the community by the quality and kindness of their children. DUH! Like dawn breaking on Marblehead (a saying in these parts) I hear so many people say "Oh, those Richardson's'...their kid is so rude and has no limits - I don't like when Jackie goes over there..." in a way, its more of an indictment of the parents. I hear people being judged by others on the 'quality' and abilities of their parenting.
So I need to wonder.....and worry about my brother and sister in law's reputation around their town...I mean their kids are a train-wreck, constantly whining, bickering, smart-alecky around teachers and adults, one kid hits other kids, and adults, and has no friends, etc etc. The others are little crybaby tattletales, obnoxious snot-nosed messes. It just is concerning to me that they are thought of as major-league AXXholes in the eyes of their neighbors and town-folk. I mean, everywhere they go, its a circus with no ringleader. This is the family that causes everyone to cringe when they walk into a restaurant. No sense of propriety or opprobrium whatsoever. We live 4 hours away, so my kid is not influenced by them but does not really want to see his cousins since they don't know how to play, share, be nice, etc. It sucks to think the world is full of idiots and my brothers family is right in there with the best of them.
