This has probably been done before somewhere in CD land but I was wondering how do you all deal with people who always have to "one-up" you? My SO's friend's GF (who I don't even like, but you kind of get thrown together) always has to one-up me when we are around eachother. Example: her car is better, her family is better, she's skinnier etc. So ANNOYING. Anyways, I never know what to say when this happens.
I just try to remain confident and have strong conviction of self because I think a lot of that 'one upping' has to do with their own insecurities. So I just smile and nod when ever they do it and ignore and move on to the next topic. I stay as quiet as possible when someone does this to me and smile. Silence makes me appear I have it together when maybe I don't and all I want to do is say 'shut the F up!'
I agree with akck. Raise your eyebrows, nod and give a pleasant "Mmm." Like a "how nice" but with less effort. Encouraging her will just make it worse.
If you've just lost your job, they've lost theirs too...AND they have a terminally ill family member.
If you've been in a car accident, they have too...and their dog died.
I think of them as "My Pity Party is Bigger Than Your Pity Party" people.
That's funny.
Actually the One-Uppers I know are in my family... and they happened to be One-Downers too. They have to have me beat, both in my happiness and my misery.
Years ago I worked with a guy like that. For entertainment we all used to tell these whopper stories to see what he'd cook up to top us. It was riotous fun and kept us from being too mad at him...

Argh, I know some of those! One woman is a one-upper and one-downer. No matter what you say, she's done that, worked there, knows someone who was on the show, vacationed there, goes to church with some celebrity's nanny's personal assistant who knows all about it. Her children were models and she never tired of reminding us about it. You could come to work November 1 and remark that you had a fun-size Nestle in your lunch box leftover from Halloween, and she'd answer, "Oh, when Taylor and Hannah modeled for Nestle, they brought those home so much that we got sick of them." Or you could compliment a coworker on her pretty shoes, only to hear, "Those ARE adorable! They remind me of the shoes than Fran Drescher wore when she was in the Welch's commercial with Hannah. I'll never forget that day because we got in a car accident on the way home."
Sooooo glad I don't work with her anymore.
