I think you are overreacting. Your SO just basically rightfully realized that his "friend" is an idiot and decided not to give him another second of his time. Unfriending him could have been an option, but nothing would be achieved with that.
And yes, you ARE a big girl. I don't want to turn this into a Facebook discussion, but it's unavoidable. If you put something out in the open like that, be prepared for all kinds of things thrown your away.
What I find most unusual (and mildly amusing) is that this began over a misspelled word.

Yes, it may have been understood by her SO that it was misspelled on purpose, but common folks may not know that and of course some feel the need to point it out (with that make themselves look smarter). She shouldn't have told him to "butt out" if she wasn't ready for an argument, everyone is commenting on everything that's being said. You know...Facebook crap.
I wasn't ready for an argument, because there was nothing to argue over.... It wasn't cool that he felt entitled to say anything in the first place. Add in the fact that he was a douche from the beginning-before I even responded he had already said I was retarded!....- that would make anyone's blood boil.
If I were speaking to my SO in person and some random person on the street rudely interrupted us to tell me I was pronouncing something wrong, I'd still inform them of how rude they are......because they're in fact, being RUDEEE! If he didn't want me to tell him to butt the hell out, then he should have kept his unwanted thoughts to himself. I can't believe the fact that this happened on the internet is outweighing the REAL problem.
I didn't initiate ANY of this, yet somehow I'm to blame!
You did not deserve to be disrespected, even if it was posted on a public forum. I think your boyfriend did stand defended you initially and then was done. However, after seeing those emails I should have unfriended him. End of story.
Deal with this now or it will bite you on the azz later...
