A female colleague is leaving soon. She's one of the most polite women I've ever worked with, did her job well and will be missed by more people than just me. Besides a simple farewell card signed by a bunch of us, I'd like to include a token gift under $20.
I asked 2 women at work for ideas but one said she doesn't like to celebrate birthdays/holidays in that sense while the other suggested the usual fare like mall/particular store or movie tickets gift certificate. Hmm... I'd like to get her something unique, not a fruit bowl or anything that she can easily go to the grocery store and buy.
How a small bouquet of flowers? I don't want to give the wrong impression that I like her, it's strictly business. The team she's leaving has some real bitter and petty people who are liable to stir up some rumors.
Does she like Starbucks or another store? Most flowers/cookie bouquets, etc. will be a bit more than $20 but I am sure a nice gift card or even a $20 bill would be appreciated by her.
When I left a job that I had for 10 years, the busdriver gave me a small bouquet on my last ride home. I was quite touched because I didn't expect it from him. Indeed, it choked me up.
To avoid any miscommunication, when you give it to her, just tell her that it was great working with her and you wish her well in her new job.

I actually plan to leave the gift on her desk for her to discover the next morning (her last day) + as I said, the card will be signed by several people so she probably won't know the gift is from me. I just hate it when people email asking for donations towards a bridal shower gift / bachelorette party, etc. at work. I usually ignore that kind of soliciting and don't want to stir up rumors from the hen house (my job has twice as many women working there as men).
