Well, if he's a thumper, it's going no where.

My friend recently died. Her husband said that early in their relationship he started talking about religion. Her response was it's none of your business.

She knew she was dying and I asked if she subscribed to any religion.
She asked me what day of the week it was. I said Tuesday.
Her response was that if this is Tuesday, I must be Hindu.

They were married for 30 years.

What do you mean by thumper?

I am really sorry about your friend. That was rude of her, don't you think?

Only if he practices one at all. I'm not a believer so it would never work.

Thumper = Bible Thumper. I think everyone knows what that is.

Yes, it matters. I used to think it was not a big deal, but I found it presented too many problems. It often results in different standards, values, goals, and even lifestyles. These are big factors for long term compatibility.

Well, I'm agnostic and my husband is Catholic. He is still spiritual and believes in God but he does not attend church anymore though and he doesn't exactly live life by Catholic standards (for example, he doesn't follow their beliefs on premarital sex). So it hasn't been an issue for us. But if he were a real church goer we probably would have been too different to be together. I don't have a problem with spirituality but religion is not for me and I couldn't have it in my life/relationship.

It depends on how much he is into it and how much he requires another person to be into it with him and whether it strongly affects his life decisions

if it affects life decisions, you two might be constantly arguing about the choices

No. By just saying "Thumper" NO ONE would know what you are talking about. The term is "bible thumper" NOT "thumper".

Bible thumper.
Why was it rude? Religion or not is a personal matter, don't you think?
I have a lot of respect for her opinion.

Why is anyone else's religious belief (or not) your business?

The discussion is about religion. So it is exactly in context.
Do tell, what else could it mean? The tread title spells it out.

Are we talking about Bambi here?

Perhaps not. The relationship would work best if we were the same religion, but they can turn out to be a different person even if we are in the same religion.
