My friend recently died. Her husband said that early in their relationship he started talking about religion. Her response was it's none of your business.
She knew she was dying and I asked if she subscribed to any religion.
She asked me what day of the week it was. I said Tuesday.
Her response was that if this is Tuesday, I must be Hindu.

They were married for 30 years.
What do you mean by thumper?
I am really sorry about your friend. That was rude of her, don't you think?
Yes, it matters. I used to think it was not a big deal, but I found it presented too many problems. It often results in different standards, values, goals, and even lifestyles. These are big factors for long term compatibility.
Well, I'm agnostic and my husband is Catholic. He is still spiritual and believes in God but he does not attend church anymore though and he doesn't exactly live life by Catholic standards (for example, he doesn't follow their beliefs on premarital sex). So it hasn't been an issue for us. But if he were a real church goer we probably would have been too different to be together. I don't have a problem with spirituality but religion is not for me and I couldn't have it in my life/relationship.
Perhaps not. The relationship would work best if we were the same religion, but they can turn out to be a different person even if we are in the same religion.
