Yeah, she's probably just friendly. Smiling at someone, talking about a major, chatting for a few minutes... these are all things you could do with a person you were interested in, but also that you could do with a friend. Sounds like in this case, she was doing it in a merely friendly way.

But! That's great that you took the plunge and went up to make a few minutes of friendly conversation. That's great practice for the next time you see a girl you might have an interest in and like others have said, this lovely-but-taken girl might have some lovely single friends. Being a nice person is never a bad thing.

Thank you. I was really proud of myself and surprised at how receptive she was. Granted, not everyone will be as receptive, but I can't be upset at trying.
