So I have exchanged some emails with this girl online and she seems really nice so I suggested chatting on the phone. However, I received a response saying that she cannot due to bad experiences in the past but we should meet up instead. This is the first time I have had this happen. Is this excess paranoia?
I want to meet her but how exactly is this going to work? When I get to the venue I can't even call her in case there is a problem (I'm delayed due to traffic or we can't find each other etc. - it's happened before).
And when exactly would she give me her #, after the 1st date or after N number of dates?? Or maybe after a background check and secret clearance?
It could be she had a stalker in the past. Anymore, once you have someone's phone number, a $10 bill will get you their name, address and all sorts of personal information.

Sounds like she might have attracted stalker behavior in the past. She's not giving up on dating, And wants to see what your like in person, Which is the best way. She's protecting her interests, And let's face it-There are some kooks out there. It's a smart move. Go and enjoy.
I Experienced this scary behavior from a woman who I first met in person. Read my posts in the "creeps" thread. It got so bad I was considering moving away.

Yeah.. Turn tables on the "stalker" and become one yourself....
I agree with what others said about a possible stalker in her past. Perhaps pick a day and time when there is less traffic, and also specify the exact location (front entrance, lobby, etc). Hopefully thing will be more relaxed when you guys meet face to face. If she still doesn't trust you after a few more dates, then it's probably not worth it. It's up to you though.

It is, in my book. Besides, cell phone numbers can't really be traced to an address like the land lines. Maybe in some cases full name shows up on the display (I'm not up to date with high-tech)… That CAN be a problem.

You know... there was life before cell phones and there will be life after them!
Try it, but if she flakes and doesn't call that will suck. Don't do anything strange on the date.... I once knew a nerdy guy who asked a girl on a date if she liked daggers... LOL
