There's these people I get along with at school/work who are lot older than me. For example, I'm 20 and this one guy I chat with and have common interests with is in his late 50s. It would feel kinda weird to be seen outside work/school with someone that much older. Are there any other benefits of this, besides maybe doing the same things as them as you with someone in the same age range?

It's always nice to have folks older than us in our lives and yes, there can be benefits to having older friends.

After all, they've lived longer and have had more life experiences, so you can often learn a lot from them.

I wouldn't worry so much about the age difference as long as you truly are "just friends".

And if you have things in common that you can share or enjoy together, go for it!

It's ok as long as you have peers your age too. Just my opinion.

Does it really matter how old someone is if you enjoy their company?

No, of course not.

Wisdom. Older people who aren't your relatives give you a sense of proportion about all the young adult angst that, looking back, was just stupid. I mean, when I think about all the nonsense that I worried about when I was 18 or 20 or 22, I cannot believe it.

I'll second lovesMountains... Their life's experiences usually mean a lot of better sound advice, I find that they are a lot more understanding of what you are going through, because they have already been there, and can relate. For some reason I find older ladies a lot more caring, than my peers, or at least they are not afraid of showing it

Pearls of wisdom, and a perspective that comes from someone who has been where you are, yet you haven't been where they have been just yet. Nothing wrong with friends that are much older. For most of my life I always had friends who were much older than me.
