Thats sounds like a lot. Ive only known 1 person and that was a hemopheliac I knew who got a contaminated transfusion when he was a child.
While it's a great Idea to get checked every so often and to use protection, very few people contract STD's. I highly doubt that you would get more than 3 people on this board come out and say they had an STD.
He got HIV from the transfusion? You don't hear about people getting it that way much anymore. "Very few people contract STDs" doesn't fly with me, but whatever works for someone else, LOL.

No, people don't get HIV from transfusions anymore unless something really bad happened, as we have in place many protocols to prevent it. Back in the day, they didn't know it was possible, and I believe it wasn't so much actual transfusions that were infecting people, but rather medicines made from blood products, though I could be mistaken on that last point.
Regardless, in recent years new HIV infections have held steady at roughly 16k per year. The fact they've held steady in an ever increasing population means the rate is going down, and though 16k is a lot of people, out of 300 million of us, it's only 0.00005% of the population, or roughly 1 in 20,000.
Not exactly widespread.
I would also note that in more than 50% of new infections it's caused by unprotected anal sex and/or the use of contaminated needles. If you're going to have anal sex do it protected and don't use dirty needles and your chances of getting HIV, even assuming you have an infected partner, are virtually nil.
HIV is considered an STD, but really it's a blood borne pathogen, and only when you get contaminated blood in your bloodstream are you at risk. Anal sex causes bleeding, and it's pretty clear that used needles exchange blood from person to person.

He said he knew someone that got HIV via a transfusion, I beleive. I know it's not common anymore....Uh, thanks for the 'anal sex refresher,' although it's not personally relevant.

"He got HIV from the transfusion?" In the 80's, passed away 10 years ago.
"Very few people contract STDs" I just don't know any and I don't see anyone coming out here that say they have contracted HIV, Gonerrea or Syphilis in their past?

I didn't say that 2nd quote, he did. I agree people aren't really keen on admitting STD pasts, even via the internet.
Instead of just throwing the word Herpe around, how about segregating by type HSV1 or 2 or other. Since, HSV1 is present in the majority of the population its making it difficult for me too follow the arguement.
How? Would you let someone who has Herpes 1 go down on you?
If you do,guess what? You will have herpes type 1 on your GENITALS!
Take a look at some pics of herpes and tell me its "just a nuisance".
Herpes may be asymptomatic for some people, but it can cause painful outbreaks of shingles in middle-to-old age. It's not just about genital sores.
Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles.
