Is the book so popular because most women desire to be dominated sexually and relationship wise by a superior tall well built rich man? or do most women just read it for entertainment and laughs?

Seduction, and passion. Entertaining release of not feeling wanted anymore.

You're not going to learn what WOMEN want, not by reading a book and not by listening to popular media and not by asking a question regarding whether you can learn what women "really" want by either of the aforementioned means.

You can only learn what THIS woman wants or THAT woman wants by paying attention, observing and listening BOTH because half of what they say will contradict half of what they do, while the other half will be remarkably precise.

If you want something general about what WOMEN want, then follow what I just said with regard to the half/half comment and then accept that women are just as diverse as men.

It's just a book, But has piqued interest in it's subject matter as evidenced by the increase in sales of related merchandise, discussions and even classes. Media and advertising are powerful tools indeed.

It's a commercially motivated book, built purely to titillate middle class white women. Don't take anything you read in it seriously.

Fifty Shades isn't what most women want any more than porn is what most men want. It's just fantasy and entertainment.

Is 50 Shades of Grey basically porn for suburban mommies?

I haven't read the book, but there can be a huge difference between what people fantasize about and actually wanting to do it. In your fantasies you can control everything, but in real life you can't.
