"Being in a relationship" means 1) being committed to each other; and 2) being monogamous if in the Western world.

I find it odd how society has devolved so quickly in this matter. It used to be that you had to be married to have intercourse; of course, most couples did not wait that long, but they at least were engaged when they had sex. Then after the sexual revolution the relationship became the standard. Now it seems that from reading these forums and the like people have further lowered the standard, even waiting until sex to decide whether or not to establish a relationship!

So I ask...should the couple at least be in a relationship before engaging in sex?

Of course, as with my other beliefs about social issues, I am conservative here and believe that sex before marriage, even in a committed relationship, is wrong.

Please identify the historical time period where it "used to be."

The 1950's.

The average woman who was of age then had something like 1.3 sexual partners.

I hate to break it to you, but people have been eff'ing around since we crawled out of the primordial ooze (or left the Garden depending on your viewpoint).

So pointing to the 50's is cool and all. Ward and June probably had plenty of friends who were doing it.

I've had sex outside of a relationship, but I was young and she was pretty. I don't have some magical portrayal of how sex should happen, but I think most people should at least aspire towards having sex in a relationship. It would be a lot better for society.

Yes, but it was mostly men that were doing that. Not that the most secretive girls were not doing it, but back in the day the consequences were more severe.
It does depend on the time period though. Prostitutes have always been around.

I believe in monogamy and commitment, and do not tolerate casual attitudes towards sex. Yes, I think one should be in a serious relationship.

But let's be real here, dude. Men have been whoring it up, down and sideways since the advent of Abrahamic religions. It's just then..women didn't have the pleasure of consent and even when they did, men had no problem being sexually adventurous, they just kept it under the radar. That ideal you mentioned was relevant only for "official" relationships. Taboos have fallen away so of course it's more prevalent now and public. But please don't use the standard of "women had 1.3 sexual partners" to measure the degradation of sexual morality. What is seen and what is not seen are both equally important.

I read that during the Victorian era, all a guy had to do to get sex was give a random female the intense stare, and if she was amenable, off they'd go. No words needed to be exchanged.
