That era suffered from a high rate of syphilis, no?

Thank you for making this point Ruth. Saved me a few keystrokes!

It's more visible now because people don't need to hide it.

I have read that Julius Caesar used to touch little boys. That intense stare still works in some bars though.

Just for the record, I need to have some sort of relationship before I can become intimate. I am just unwilling to judge, particularly on incredibly poor interpretations of historical mores, others who behave differently.

I find it odd how society has devolved so quickly in this matter. It used to be that you had to be married to have intercourse; of course, most couples did not wait that long, but they at least were engaged when they had sex. Then after the sexual revolution the relationship became the standard. Now it seems that from reading these forums and the like people have further lowered the standard, even waiting until sex to decide whether or not to establish a relationship!

So I ask...should the couple at least be in a relationship before engaging in sex?

Of course, as with my other beliefs about social issues, I am conservative here and believe that sex before marriage, even in a committed relationship, is wrong.
You're right man! Don't let this world fool you about whether you are right or wrong. I mean, the statistics don't lie. Look at the amount of children who don't know their parent (mother/father) and vice versa. Look at the amount of abortions. If people were married before they had sex that abortion number would go down dramatically. That's the scientific part of it, but spiritually I am a man of God and have made the mistake of sex before marraige as I have made many other mistakes and still probably will in life, but deep down you know when something isn't right in society. Some people have tuned out God and traditional values calling that freedom. They will find as time goes on and the moral values of society decay even more that the definition of freedom they believe in is actually the slavery to sin that the Bible talks about. People wonder why or question how God allows some things but yet we all sit here making small decisions in our lives each day that produce huge consequences for people in our paths.

So basically what I'm getting from some of the responses on here is....Since people have been doing this throughout periods of history (that we did not live in) that we should do it too. Kind of like saying, hey the people that live in my neighborhood commit adultry all the time, so why shouldn't I? There are consequences for sexual behavior.

It does depend on the time period though. Prostitutes have always been around.
And were these men having sex with the air? Sex with themselves? Sex with other men?

I really suggest you read up on the history of sex across cultures. What you see on tv sitcoms is not reflective of what life is/was like.

That era had no contraception, knowledge of STDs was naught, and there were no vaccinations. Soap didn't become the norm in upper-class Western civilization until the mid-to-late 1800s, thus there was no sanitation. Your point is moot.

Where did you read this? I think the old addage applies here: Don't believe everything you read.
