Oh really? What say you and I meet meet at the Northridge train station, take the the train to the Orange Line bus that runs between Oxnard and Victory to the subway station in North Hollywood, then take the subway to Hollywood and Highland then walk up to the Hollywood bowl for a date to see Tony Bennett? Then, at around midnite or so, when the show is over, we can walk back down Highland, to the subway station, take the train back to NoHo, wait at the bus stop for the Orange line to take us back to Northidge and call it a night.
LOL. You know, now that I think about it, that sounds like it would be a fun and adventurous date.
I live in an area where we don't have a metro or much of a cab service. The cab service is mostly used for bars to take people home when they are intoxicated.
So I don't know how I would react if someone Showed up to a date in a cab or something. If I were living in a large city it probably wouldn't bother me.
You would feel like Carrie, running down to meet Big.
My least favorite thing about LA (and other more car-centric places) is the casual drinking and driving. I was shocked at how many people would have 4-5 drinks then drive an hour home without thinking anything of it.
It really depends on where you are. I think that it could work out in a place like Los Angeles granted the logistics. I don't own a car at all (I live in NY) and I don't mind taking the train (i've been taking it my whole life). Although I've tried this in places like Houston, Miami to less than desirable results.
I think this is a regional thing. Having lived in NYC most of my adult life, I never even had a car until we moved out of the city. And then when we moved out of the city and before I had my son, I still preferred to take the train into Manhattan because it was so much easier than parking. Now that I have my son, driving is just easier - even with parking. But if you live in an area with good public transportation - I see no problem with using it on a date. People who have never lived in such places probably don't understand what life is like in these areas. In Manhattan - it's SOOOO much easier to get around on the subway or even in a cab than it is to find parking or deal with traffic and whatnot.

Okay, I am exhausted just thinking about that, so I get your point. SoCal public transportation is just not set up the same way as older metro areas.
However, I will be there if you bring your wife and some decent Mexican food.
Where I used to live? No way. There wasn't really any public transportation (we had one bus in my entire town and it only ran up and down the main drag at random times... if you didn't have a car, you were stuck.
Here in Boston? I've found a lot of people still have cars, but I still prefer public transportation and don't plan on buying a vehicle any time soon. I can get basically anywhere with the trains, busses and shuttles and for everything else I have a zipcar membership with 3 cars a few hundred feet away from my front door.
In CA, yes...it would have been a huge issue. Here? Not a problem.
