Seems like a waste of time putting up an online dating profile and not include any photos.

Of course once you chat with them they can then share them. Why bother with the hassle.
Better off just putting them up straight away. You can still protect your privacy with what the photos you share show. Any photos are better than none.

When I was doing online dating. The girls/women that included photos from the get go, were much more likely to get my messages than those without.

Agree or disagree?

Obviously I can't tell you why other people do, or don't do things.

On the flip side: perhaps they feel their looks aren't impressive and they may be ignored because of that; and they would like someone to get to know them for who they are, not for how they look.

I would rather not see photos than see someones butt, gut, pets, kids, and their own mother..you get the idea.

Why someone puts kids in their pics online,I haven't the slightest idea. That's the worst you could do is expose your own children.

What if a child lover was looking at your photos?

I suspect the very reason you considered it a "hassle" to speak to them first before knowing what they look like was the reason some of them didn't put up a photo: to weed out people who are primarily interested in superficial appearances and wouldn't bother getting to know them without knowing what they looked like.

Oh, those poor women who didn't get messages from you. I'm sure they cry themselves to sleep at the thought of missing out on you.

Plenty of people use online dating with no photos, and have success. I went out with lots of guys that didn't have photos, but had a great profile. Most of them were great guys...but there were a few duds of course. However, one guy I ended up dating for 6 months. He was a very successful lawyer and did not wish to put his pictures online. Once we chatted a couple of times, he made a video for me of him cooking breakfast that morning, and sent that to me. I thought that was a terrific idea, and it gave me a great sense of his personality. So it definitely CAN work.

I think they are either already with someone and looking for something on the side or maybe well known among people and don't want their business put out there.

I never understood it either, though.

Been awhile since I did OLD, but won't respond to those types. If they're so "private" or ashamed that they're doing OLD I don't want to deal with them.
