I've noticed a pattern in couples in the past. Take my parents generation. They married in June 1982 and my elder brother was born in June 1983. The same thing happened with my uncles and aunts and many of my parents' friends.
It seemmed like people married and she got pregnant right away. Let's not even talk about grandparents, those were even faster. My uncle was born in the same year.
P.S. My grandparents went on honeymoon to Rome and one day I asked my grandfather if he enjoyed the city. He just said "I don't know, we didn't even leave the hotel room". That have something to do with it.
My parents were married for 5 years before they had me. My husband's parents were married for 4 or 5 years before they started having children. After they did have reliable birth control - it was up to the couple.
I was answering the "couples in the past" part, sorry. But it's still the same answer. People have sex without contraceptives and babies happen.
