Could you guys help me understanding this thing he told me, was it a hidden compliment or am I overreacting ? (dating, girl)

I feel like this guy I've recently met maybe has an interest in me but I'm not sure... the thing is, he is often trying to talk to me or to spend time alone with me, and he sometimes says things that i find flirty or ambiguous . I also feel like he tried to compliment me the other day but I'm not sure...
We were teasing each other and he was joking about how he'd liked to be called "great" or "splendid" by someone (I know sounds weird out of the context... xd it was a bit but, not that much ) so I laughed and he said "come on, someone surely told you you were splendid ?". I felt a bit embarrassed, laughed and we kept on teasing each other and changed the subject, but ... can you guys tell me if I'm crazy and overreacting (really... you can tell me) or if maybe this could have slightly been a way for him to hint something ? Would you say that to a girl ?
He also joked about him and me dating with wine and candles the other day... it was a joke but, well.

Well I don't understand your account of the splendid conversation, but...........he is clearly interested in you and if you want to date him you need to let him know. If you aren't interested, you need to let him know that also.
Men do not make jokes about wine and candles if they are not interested.

Of course he's interested! My question is, are you interested in him? His subtlety is probably a way for him to avoid embarrasment if you reject him. If you like this guy, take the lead and respond with something like, "wine and candles are fine, only if we're having dinner with them", or some such thing. If he misses that opportunity, whack him with your purse (lol). Some guys need a little help. Being direct almost always works. If you like him, GO FOR IT!!!

Lot of goofiness going on, id say you are very young, to not know that you both are flirting with each other.
I wouldn't know...and I consider myself old...
