NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Men dread Valentine's Day. Or not. It seems men expect nearly $230 to be spent on them on the day of hearts and flowers, while women expect gifts totaling just $196. But get this disconnect: women plan to spend $71, while men are budgeting $98 for Valentine's Day presents. Seems everybody could be disappointed.
I've only ever received a Vday gift from my Father...he used to get me, my Mother and my sister flowers every year. My ex didn't believe in Valentines Day and would purposely avoid me the week of, and my other ex broke up with me before we had a chance to celebrate it.
So... people shouldn't take stuff like this for granted and put a dollar amount on expectations. Just be happy you have someone who loves you.
Wow... that's a lot of money (both the averages and what people are actually budgeting). Of course, it's an average, so some people with $1000 expectations are offsetting more reasonable expectations. I am not even sure if the man I am dating will even remember me on Valentines... I am trying not to get my hopes up. I got him a card and I am sending him some chocolates from a local shop that hand makes them (but that's only $17 a box plus shipping... it's a long distance things). I have a guy friend who is really sweet and gets kind of depressed being single this time of year. I am debating sending him something too... anonymously... just to put a smile on his face. My only fear is it might make matters worse for him. Still debating that.

It's true that being loved is more important than all those cheap, tacky and ugly gifts I saw in the Walmart flyer last night. Nothing says love more than a monkey wearing sunglasses and holding a felt rose.
If they can only get one of four things for Valentine's Day -- sex, dinner, lingerie or flowers -- the majority of Canadians are going to opt for sex, a new poll says.
Of those surveyed, 61% said they would prefer to have sex over receiving a gift.
What happened to that thread from the guy who was wondering when it would be appropriate to start paying his girlfriend's bills? I wonder what those two are expecting from each other on V-Day?
My birthday is February 5. I don't want a present for either day. I want quality family time on or near my B-day and some romantic one on one time with my SO on Valentines day. That's plenty!
I'd be perfectly happy with a nice steak dinner followed by a great BJ. No material gifts necessary for me
