I've practiced the whole FWB thing since high school, and they've generally always been weekly (or more) type encounters. It's different for everyone, but for me:
1, I'm young, horny, and want sex. Luckily my current FWBs are the same way. It's win-win.
2, I don't want a relationship right now. They are in the same boat. Again, win-win.
3, just because you spend a lot of time together doesn't mean it needs to be a relationship.
4, for me, it ties into the not wanting a relationship right now, and the ability to sleep with whomever I please.
Side note is that while one of my FWB and I have some of the hottest sex we've both ever experienced, I really doubt we'd make a good couple. We both agree on this fact - so why ruin the fun we're having currently.
It's different for everyone, though. I have a few friends that have FWB and they are a few times a month, and other friends that have a more similar FWB set up to mine.

There have been several times it was just one FWB at a certain time, and we were still hooking up 3-5 times per week.
I'm still a virgin in my mid 30s. I have considered hiring an escort but I find the process so nerve wracking that I'd probably be unable to perform. My town is notorious for police sting ops. One of my buddies was busted not too long ago.

Sex lives come and go for most people. I've had hot streaks when I was never waiting too long in between partners and occasionally even had some overlappers.
