Got a call the other night from a guy confessing how much he's been trying to get my attention;
I thought I was flirting whenever we saw each other-
but he said he never got the feeling I was into him,
yet he pretty boldly told me how he's been doing everything he can to get me to notice him.

I can't remember that last time I've actually flirted. It must be one of those things I've done on rare occasions. I imagine it being a pretty awkward experience for the woman I'm trying to flirt with.
When I was single I used to flirt with women by momentarily studying them and then subtly complimenting them on something that I suspect they are working on improving. Everyone gets compliments on their obvious traits, but they tend to value the attributes that require effort to develop more.
I rarely say anything about appearance or clothing, but the right compliment about personal style, social skills, personality traits, or shared interests can turn up the heat when a woman is already somewhat interested in me.
I know it is not and "alpha" thing to do, but I generally don't ask a woman out until I have flirted with her on several occasions. Most of my serious relationships have started this way, and both my ex wife and my fiancee expressed frustration that I waited too long to ask them out. I don't think it is fear of rejection that motivates me to act like this, I just enjoy the tension and excitement of meeting someone new and I don't necessarily need to rush into anything.
