I am a single 42 yo female looking for a fresh start. Being an empty nester I am now able to move anywhere from the northeast NY winters and taxes! Problem is I have no idea where I'd like to go. I have only been to GA and FL for a 1 wk stretch at both. I prefer to be on/near the coast. East, west, south, doesnt matter. My requirements are low taxes/cost of living, good healthcare, SAFE to walk, bike and just live, as I will be doing this alone and am very active. I don't mind the heat but would prefer not to have to stay inside due to the bugs like I've had to during the NY summers. Any suggestions?

Oh shoot didn't see low taxes and cost of living...LOL scratch that off completely. Florida is cheaper than Ca but you have the heat and bugs. Maybe Sc or Nc like the other poster said. Also perhaps the PNW.

California would be fine, but not low cost.

SC is fairly low cost, but bugs, but no place is perfect.

Umm, while I get the winters, the cost of living may be about the same, if your zip code is correct. It isn't in "Northeastern" NY by the way. I've never heard of anyone refer to a part of the state as Northeastern NY.

WA State has no state income tax or capital gains tax for your retirement/investment account, OP. What about jobs? Entertainment? There are many neighborhoods in Seattle that would fit your requirements, though housing is expensive. For significantly lower housing costs, you can try Bellingham (a very scenic university town, if you like the presence of a university, for classes, lectures, & other events), Olympia (also a university town), or Port Townsend, on the Olympic Peninsula. Of the three, Port Townsend has the best weather, because it's in the rain shadow of the mountains. It also has a busy calendar of weekend festivals spring through fall. It's a small but picturesque town. Job availability is tight, though.
