Thank goodness I ignored all the naysayers and tried POF. We'll be together a year this month.
That's awesome! Congratulations! I met my last boyfriend online, but through YouTube. We were together almost a year and a half, and I'm kind of thinking about working things out with him, again. I met the boyfriend before that on myspace (together 6 months), when I did a music video for him (producer/director). I was not looking for a date on either site, but it happens. I'm an incorrigible flirt, so... ha.
I'm not really a "naysayer" because I've heard many success stories, so if it works, more power to ya! For example, I've heard nothing but awful things online about eharmony (not free), but my best friend has met her current SO on there, been together almost 2 years, and my brother met his wife through that site by proxy (he went on a date with a girl, and they didn't really click, but she told him she knew the perfect girl for him. She's now my SIL!).
I made a lot of e-friends on POF, but nobody I clicked with, romantically (reasons posted either here or in another thread, I forget...). Same with OKC. I'm still in contact with a couple guys that became good friends. Datehookup just didn't appeal to me because I was trying to fill out my profile and immediately one guy started badgering me about getting on IM with him, and I would tell him I didn't have time. He could see me online, and continued to say "Do you have time, now?" I just shut my account down, after telling him I was a little overwhelmed with the 15 messages he'd sent me my first hour on that site.
There will always be people with bad experiences who will assume EVERYONE will have that same experience, but I'm an optimist, I'm careful, and experience has taught me to trust my instincts. Best of luck to ya.
